Japanese typography is extremely complex and refined, and follows completely different rules and requirements than Western publishing workflows. This also means that notions of productivity and efficiency for Western publishing workflows only partially apply to Japanese publishing. In early 2003, Adobe Systems commissioned Pfeiffer Consulting to conduct in-depth market-specific productivity measures to assess the impact of the Japanese version of InDesign 2.0. These benchmarks, based on Pfeiffer Consultings methodology for productivity benchmarking, were defined and supervised by Takashi Sasaki of ImageExplain, Tokyo, and covered many aspects of Japanese typography and page production. Market Specific Productivity Measures Market specific page layout assignments included: Vertical composition benchmark Horizontal composition benchmark Complex page layout, including Illustrator and Photoshop integration All of these tests were defined with specific Japanese composition and publishing requirements in mind and take in account specific Japanese publishing environments and work procedures.
